What Makes a Name Sound Elvish
Four sound habits do all the work. Spot them below and you can judge any elvish name at a glance — or compose your own.
House prefixes
El-, Elen-, Amin-, Calë-, Vanya-
Every name opens with one of five melodic prefixes, like the surname of an elven house. El- and Elen- carry the star sound that runs through the whole language.
Singing endings
-ë, -iel, -ion, -arë
Names close on an open vowel so they ring instead of stopping. As a loose rule, -iel reads flowing and feminine, -ion reads formal and masculine, and -ë suits anything small and gentle.
Smoothed vowels
brook → Elenbrokiel, gleam → Calëglemarë
Double vowels melt into one so nothing interrupts the melody — brook becomes brok, gleam becomes glem. Say the name aloud and the seed word is still right there.
Meaning stays visible
rowan → Elenrowaniel
The English seed survives inside the name, so a character named after a river, a bird or a season carries that meaning openly. Pick the seed that describes them and the name explains itself.

Make Your Own Elvish Name
Type any English word — a favorite tree, a season, the thing your pet destroys most — and it comes back wearing the same elvish sounds as every name above. Single words work best for names.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use these elvish names for D&D characters or online games?
Yes — that is what they are for. Celestial and forest names suit high elves, druids and mages; heroic names fit rangers and sentinels; gentle names work for bards, healers and pets. Use them as-is or as a starting point for your own.
Are these real Elvish names from a book, film or game?
No. Every name here is original, built for this site's own elvish-inspired fictional language. They draw on the general feel of fantasy elvish but are not taken from, or affiliated with, any author, estate, studio or published setting — so you can use them without borrowing anyone else's lore.
How were these names made?
Each name starts as the plain English word shown under it and is reshaped by the same sound patterns the Elvish-inspired translator on this site applies — house prefixes like Elen- and Vanya-, singing endings like -iel and -ë, and smoothed vowels. A name you build with the translator will sound like it belongs on this list.
Which ending should I pick for a female or male character?
The endings are only tendencies, not rules: -iel flows and reads feminine (Elenaroraiel), -ion reads formal and masculine (Amintalonion), and -ë stays neutral and soft (Elstormë). Swap the ending on any name here and it still sounds elvish — pick whichever fits the character.
Do these work for gamertags, pet names or calligraphy?
Yes. They fit most gamertag length limits as written, and the ë can be typed as a plain e where a platform rejects accents (Elstorme, Elensageiel). Gentle-column names are popular for pets, and the long flowing ones — Elenwinteriel, Vanyalullabiel — are favorites for calligraphy and engraving.
